Sooner Jump Start support begins with the submission of an application. As soon as your application has been received, you gain access to many useful resources, including information to help you transition from your home country smoothly. Below are some useful resources.
We realize that departing your home country can be stressful and scary. As a student of Sooner Jump Start, we want to make this transition as smooth and stress-free as possible. One way we've done this is by creating a document that contains useful information about what you need to bring. Along with what to pack, the document contains information about weather, credit cards, healthcare information and a checklist for leaving the U.S., just to name a few. This document is sent with your Sooner Jump Start admission letter. If you've lost your admission letter or want to get a head start, you can get this information below.
In Oklahoma, summers are hot and winters are cold. In the fall and spring, temperatures can change from cold to hot each day. Oklahoma has rain, snow, and wind. Be sure to pack clothes for all weather types or purchase clothes after you arrive.
Healthcare in the United States can be expensive and different than healthcare in other countries. We suggest that you schedule dental and vision examinations before you leave your home country. Although you will be receiving student medical insurance, dental and vision care are not included.
We recommend you bring a Visa or MasterCard credit card with you. Obtaining a credit card in the United States can be difficult and expensive. After you arrive, Sooner Jump Start will take you to a bank to deposit any cash you bring and setup a bank account. We will also take you to get a U.S. cell phone and phone number. Before you depart, we recommend you give your family the Sooner Jump Start contact information below in case they need to contact our office.
Shortly after arrival, the SJS office will have transportation available to stores where you can purchase most of these supplies. We recommend you pack lightly and purchase everything else after you arrive.
Sometimes luggage can get lost during travel. If your luggage is lost by the airline, upon arrival to Will Rogers Airport, ask the airline to deliver your luggage to the following address (and keep this address with you when you travel):
Sooner Jump Start
Boomer Outreach Building
300 Kellogg Drive
Norman, OK 73072
It's important to know about the city you will be staying in while at OU. While Norman is a great college town with a lot of things to do, SJS students have access to greater Oklahoma City, the largest metropolitan area in Oklahoma.
Here are some great websites to visit to learn about the "Heart of America."
Will Rogers World Airport is located in Oklahoma City and is about 30 minutes from the University of Oklahoma campus. The location of this airport means a fast and convenient ride to your new home at OU.

Transportation from Will Rogers World Airport will be provided to OU Walker Tower. After your flight lands, follow the signs to Baggage Claim #4. You will find an OU welcome table. Speak to the OU representative. If no one is there, call Airport Express for a ride to OU: (405) 681-3311.
As soon as possible, please notify SJS of your flight information and your cell phone number.

Students are required to stay in on-campus Residence Halls for their first year at the University of Oklahoma. Sooner Jump Start will reserve SJS student rooms before arriving. The designated check-in date for Fall 2018 is August 20, 2018. If students arrive from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the designated check-in date, they will check-in to their permanent Residence Hall assignment. If students arrive outside of this date and time, they will stay in temporary housing (costs apply) until the following business day.
