Have Questions?

Here's a list of questions we're frequently asked, with some helpful answers.

General FAQ

Sooner Flight Academy is located on the University of Oklahoma North Research Campus.  This facility is on the Max Westheimer Airport in Norman, OK.  Our street address is 1928 Goddard Ave.  A Google Map can be found on any of our events on the upcoming events page.

No matter the season, Sooner Flight Academy makes every attempt to go outside at some point during every program.  Please dress appropriately for the weather and for being active.  This means close-toed shoes.  If it’s likely to be cold outside, wear a jacket, gloves, and a hat.  If it’s likely to be hot, shorts and t-shirts are great (especially light-colored clothing to reflect as much heat as possible).  Please dress modestly as well, as  children in any learning environment don’t need any additional distractions.  For all day programs, please send a sack lunch and drink.  We cannot refrigerate or microwave food for camp participants.

The Sooner Flight Academy is part of the College of Professional and Continuing Studies.  We are required to use the College's central registration system for all of our events.  While we can pull information from that database to show you your registration history, we cannot send them information to automatically log you in to their system.  You will need to create a registration log-in (or use one from a previous event you registered for) to register for a Sooner Flight Academy event.  If you are a new customer, we recommend using the same email address for both our website and the registration system.

When you log-in to the Sooner Flight Academy (SFA) website, we use the associated email address to query the registration database.  If you have registered for multiple events using different email addresses, you will only be able to see the registration history associated with one email address at a time.  You can change your email address associated with your SFA account at our Update My Info page (click link to the left).

You need to login to the website in order to register for summer camp, day camp and workshops.

Events that do not have registration buttons are not open to individual registration.  Either registration is closed or the event is a group scheduled event.

Yes, partial scholarships are available for Summer Camp.  Scholarships are not available for extended day curriculum.  You must be registered for a session of Summer Camp to apply for a partial scholarship.  Please visit the scholarships page on our website for information on how to apply.

Please note the partial scholarship application deadline has been moved to April 1st.  No applications will be accepted after April 1st.

Because of university insurance requirements, certain FAA regulations, and grant requirements, we require campers to register for the camp according to age.  The age cutoff is June 1st.  If your camper’s birthday is after June 1st, please register him/her for the younger camp.  You may register for a camp that is up to one year younger than your camper.  If your camper has already attended the oldest camp he/she is eligible for, please email us at flightcamp@ou.edu and describe your circumstances.  We try to avoid campers attending the same camp twice.

Summer Camp at Sooner Flight Academy is an action-packed five days of hands-on activities teaching students that science is fun!  Camps are filled with activities and materials that are developmentally appropriate for each age and staffed by college students who have backgrounds in aviation, science and/or education. Every camper will experience being upclose to OU's fleet of Training Aircraft and Certified Flight Instructors.  If weather conditions and aircraft availability permit, campers aged eight and above participate in educational orientation flights in those training aircraft with  flight instructors.  Campers also learn about Newton’s Laws of Motion, the Bernoulli Principle and many other aspects of aviation.  All campers will build and launch model rockets (weather permitting).  See Camper Handbook for a description of each camp.

You must be a faculty or staff member at the University of Oklahoma, or you are a full-time student at the University of Oklahoma (if you are located at the Health Science Center, be sure to use your OUHSC email address when you login to register).  Please login using your OU Net ID.

Scholarships FAQ

The  Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission (OAC) is the primary funding source for the Sooner Flight Academy Partial Scholarships.  Each year, the OAC grants institutions like the Sooner Flight Academy funding from their Education Grant.  Learn more about the Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission.  Private donors also contribute to the Sooner Flight Academy Scholarship fund.

Partial scholarships are only available for our Summer Camp Programs.

Sooner Flight Academy partial scholarships are based on need but have no pre-determined income requirements.  The only eligibility requirement for a summer camp partial scholarship is to be registered for a session of summer camp.  We cannot consider any partial scholarship applications without a corresponding summer camp registration.

Please note the partial scholarship application deadline has been moved to April 1st.  No applications will be accepted after April 1st.

While the goal of the Scholarship Selection Committee is to make it possible for as many campers to attend as possible, applicants are not guaranteed to receive any scholarship assistance for camp.  The scholarship selection committee will consider financial need and/or extenuating circumstances when determining awards.  That being said, in the last several years, almost every applicant has received at least a little assistance in paying for summer camp.

During the camp registration process, you will be given the opportunity to tell us you wish to apply for a scholarship.  Once you have registered for a session of summer camp, a link to the scholarship will be available from your parents page.  Look for "Request Scholarship" in the menu on the left side.

Please note that the deadline to apply for a partial scholarship has been moved to April 1st.

Summer Camp registration begins March 1st.  The partial scholarship applications will open at that time.

The partial scholarship application deadline is April 1st.  NO applications will be accepted after April 1st.

You will need to have ready the following information to complete the application form:

  • Camp Session registered for (from your summer camp registration confirmation email)
  • Camper’s full name
  • Number of people in household
  • Household adjusted gross income for last year
  • Description of family circumstances (why you are requesting scholarship assistance to pay for summer camp)
  • Creative Submission (essay, poem, story, picture, diorama, etc.)

Your child should convey to the scholarship selection committee, in some creative way, why he/she wants to come to camp.  This could be an essay, poem, story, picture, diorama, etc.   Please upload the creative submission as an attachment (or can be scanned) and submit it digitally with your scholarship application.  Please call us at (405) 325-1635 or email us at flightcamp@ou.edu if you have any questions.

The Scholarship Selection Committee will meet during the first week of April.  If you have been awarded a partial scholarship, you will be notified by email or phone by April 15th.  We require a written acceptance (by USPS, fax, or email) to apply the partial scholarship to your account.  If we do not receive a written acceptance within seven days, your partial scholarship will be awarded to another applicant.  Scholarships are applied directly to your camp balance and the parent or responsible party will be billed for the remainder of the balance which is due by May 15th.  All remaining balances must be paid over the phone by credit card by calling (405) 325-6808 or by check mailed to our registration office at:
