Sooner Fllight Academy is going virtual during these extraordinary times. Each of our online Virtual Programs offers live instructor interaction and activity supplies delivered to participants. We’ve created a wide variety of hands-on programs designed to let students ages 6 to 18 discover the scientific principles that make things work and introducing kids to the world of flying with Bernoulli’s Principle, the four forces of flight and Newton’s Laws of Motion.

Each six-week virtual program will run from October 12 - November 20.

Registration opens on September 15. Registration for each program level will remain open until October 5, or until the session capacity of 36 participants is reached for that level.

Age 9 - Electricity and Communication - $175
Electricity and Communication are the themes of this program. Hands-on kits will help participants learn what circuits do and what they need to work. Communication is explored with water waves to demonstrate how radio waves work to allow communication between pilots and the ATC towers. Exploring magnets and how a compass works help participants learn about the earth and navigation. Many more hands-on activities will be a part of this fun program. Many of your toys/kits/supplies will be a part of your SFA package delivered to you.

Age 10 - Space History and New Moon Mission - $200
Space History and the New Moon Mission are the themes of this program. The NASA space program is featured, as participants learn about the shuttle program and space exploration’s early years. Galileo’s Cannon and Bernoulli’s stations will help the young astronauts to understand the physics that cause things to achieve flight and orbit around our wonderful planet. Toys in space will help to explore gravity and the lack thereof! Many of your toys/kits/supplies will be a part of your SFA package delivered to you.

SFA_Fall_2020_Patches_AircraftDesign.png

Age 11 - Aircraft Design and Materials Science - $200
Aircraft Design and Materials Science are the themes of this program. How and why aircraft are engineered and what type of materials are used are explored. Learning about how gyroscopes achieve stability and how they are part of aircraft instruments is a fascinating lesson with hands-on fun. Building a hovercraft kit, learning about Archimedes, building rockets and flying kites make this an engaging and fun program. Many of your toys/kits/supplies will be a part of your SFA package delivered to you.

Age 12 - Weather and Broadcast Meteorology - $225
Weather and Broadcast Meteorology are the themes of this program. Participants will meet a broadcast meteorologist who will share their love for the weather and how pilots need to be weather aware by learning about what generates wind/storms/lightning. Creating a tornado in a bottle will demonstrate the effects on structures. Building a weather station kit, building rockets and solar planes and flying kites are just some of the many activities. Many of your toys/kits/supplies will be a part of your SFA package delivered to you.

Age 13 - Aerospace Engineering - $250
Aerospace Engineering is the theme of this program. Hands-on activities and problem-solving initiatives keep participants engaged by introducing them to a variety of career field in aerospace, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering. Testing out the performance of their hand-crafted airfoil in a homemade wind-tunnel will be a duplication of some of the Wright Brothers experiments. Bernoulli’s principles will be demonstrated in many of the activities and Newton’s Laws of motion are always part of the fun with this program. Kites and rockets are just part of the fun science. This program features our new UAS-drone pilot activities. Each participant will receive in their supplies a small indoor quad-copter (drone) that will be used to explore the aerodynamics of flight. We will also explore the many career options that a licensed-drone operator could explore. Participants will also experience virtual pre-flights, airport operations tours and careers at the airport. You’re never too old for kites and rockets while also learning to do flight planning using sectionals and E-6B’s. Many of your toys/kits/supplies will be a part of your SFA package delivered to you.

Virtual Program Schedules

Students will participate in two zoom sessions each week—on Mondays and Thursdays— to ensure they are engaged with the curriculum and give them a chance to ask questions and interact with their program navigator.

During the Monday session, the program navigator will introduce participants to each week’s activities, conduct science demonstrations and offer guidance on self-directed projects.

Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and contribute their knowledge during these sessions. They will also have the chance to interact with students their own age. Zoom session times to be announced.

All lessons and videos for the program can be accessed through Canvas. This material will also guide each participant through how to use the supplies which are included in their SFA program package. Some common household items and tools will be needed in addition to the SFA program package, which will not be provided by SFA. A list of these items will be sent in advance of the start of the virtual program.

Canvas material can be accessed 24 hours a day and will be available for 30 days after the program session has ended.

A pre-quiz and post-quiz will be part of the program. These are used to help SFA assess the success of our curriculum and help the participants to realize their growth with the material. The completed quizzes, along with uploading a photo or short video of all activities, will complete the course.

A certificate of completion will be awarded once the work is completed with uploads to each participant's account.
