Shijun Chen is now serving as the music director of the University of Oklahoma Civic Orchestra. 

Before coming to OU, Mr. Chen studied with Dr. Carolyn Watson for his Master’s of Music in Instrumental Conducting at Texas State University. He built a community orchestra called Texas State University Orchestra with his colleague and had two concerts each semester during his study in Texas State University. He also worked with Maestro David Mairs, Dr. Peter Bay and Mr. Troy Peters for conducting master classes. 

Mr. Chen has a violin background. He served as the concertmaster of the Texas State Symphony Orchestra and Texas State Chamber Orchestra. While pursuing his violin degree, he played in the Texas State Graduate String Quartet and worked with the Attacca Quartet, Claremont Trio and the Aeolus string quartet for master class. 

Mr. Chen achieved his two master’s degrees in violin performance and Instrumental Conducting in May 2016 and 2018. Now he is studying with Dr. Jonathan Shames  at the University of Oklahoma for a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Orchestral Conducting.
