Congratulations on starting your academic career at the University of Oklahoma! Before you begin taking notes, writing papers and diving into discussion boards, we would like to remind you to please use your OU email address when sending school-related materials.
There are several reasons we ask that you use your Office 365 account to check school-related emails. Here are just a few of them:
1. You won’t lose OU email to your spam filters
Very recently, some service providers and private email servers began blocking emails coming from the ou.edu domain. Since the majority of your professors, instructors, advisors and peers use ou.edu in their email addresses, this means that you might not be getting important messages that are sent to you from OU.
This is because your service provider or email server believes that emails from ou.edu are spam. Using the Office 365 interface will protect this from happening and ensure you receive all of the emails being sent to you from the university.
2. It will help prove you are who you say you are
As you could probably guess, emails sent from OU are meant to be seen by you alone. Sensitive information like coursework, advising topics and basic student information are often addressed in these private emails. Using an email address given to you by the university helps us ensure we are disclosing this information to the correct person — and not someone you would not want to see it.
This also protects you personally by minimizing the threat that someone can hijack your email account. If you associate a strong password with your OU account, change that password regularly and ensure it is protected, you will have a lower risk of someone logging into your account without your knowledge.
3. It is the first email address people at OU will use to reach you
When you enroll at OU, you are assigned an email address unique to your name and student ID. Unless otherwise specified, this email address is the one associated with your account at OU. Often, people at OU who are trying to contact you will try this email address first. Remembering to check it regularly — and often — will ensure you receive all of the important information being sent to you.
Get set up on OU email
If you already know that you are checking your OU email, you don’t have to do anything. Congratulations! You are ready to go for the upcoming semester. If you aren’t sure, however, here are a couple of things you can do to get set up.
Step 1. Check to see if you are already set up correctly
Make sure your OU account is functional by simply sending an email to yourself at your assigned OU email address (hint: this address will end in @ou.edu). You can then log into portal.office365.com to see if the email was received.
If the test email arrives in your inbox, your OU email address is working, and the setup process is complete.
