OU Aviation and Max Westheimer Airport will host the 12th Annual Aviation Festival and Open House on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The free, family-friendly event will feature a wide array of aircraft on display, from a variety of helicopters and private planes to aircraft from OU’s own fleet. Attendees will also be able to tour the Max Westheimer Control tower, view radio-controlled aircraft demonstrations and interact with law enforcement and military vehicles.
“Aviation is critical to our regional, state, national and global economy and way of life, but most importantly, through our open house, we expose community members and their children to possible careers in aviation.”
“We are always thrilled to have our Aviation team of faculty, instructors, staff and students, plus our many Friends of OU Aviation volunteers who come out and help put on this wonderful event for the community,” said Ken Carson, director of the OU Department of Aviation. “Aviation is critical to our regional, state, national and global economy and way of life, but most importantly, through our open house, we expose community members and their children to possible careers in aviation.”
Sooner Flight Academy’s mascot, Sooney, will host events at the Kid’s Hangar, where children will have the chance to role-play a variety of different airport jobs, including pilot and co-pilot, refueler, security agent, ticket agent, baggage handler and flight attendant, as well as aircraft mechanic, ramp personnel directing aircraft parking and a crop dusting plane toss.
Participants will also have the opportunity to meet OU sports mascot, Boomer, meet the crew of the OU Sooner Schooner and the real-life horses that pull it, Boomer and Sooner.
Parking and admission to the festival are both free. Max Westheimer Airport is located at 1700 Lexington Ave., Norman, OK 73069-8495. Parking can be accessed on Goddard Ave., near the airport terminal—just follow the signs!
