To show their appreciation, OU Outreach and the Oklahoma City Thunder teamed up to honor the 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team at a Thunder game on Wednesday, March 23. The 45th was recently called up for deployment to Afghanistan; many guard members have already left for training in preparation for their summer deployment.
Several hundred Thunderbirds and their families were invited to the game – it was a small way to say “thank you” for their sacrifice. The entire game was framed around recognizing these servicemembers and their families. The honorary Thunder captains and game ball presenters were children whose parents have already been deployed. A video featuring Sooner and Thunder VIPs debuted at halftime, followed by a special presentation.
Several military and political dignitaries were in attendance, including Secretary of Veterans Affairs Rita Aragon and Maj. Gen. Myles Deering. Outreach Vice President James Pappas, PACS Associate Dean Martha Banz, and Outreach Associate Vice President Richard Little were also there showing their support.
