The OU Extended Campus Department of Aviation recently received a $46,500 grant from the Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission (OAC) for its Sooner Flight Academy education programs. The department was one of 28 organizations awarded Aerospace and Aviation Education Program grants totaling $296,697 from the commission.
Sooner Flight Academy provides year-round, hands-on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) activities for children, families, teachers and students, including summer camps, field trips and school programs.
Sooner Flight Academy provides year-round, hands-on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) activities for children, families, teachers and students, including summer camps, field trips and school programs. SFA’s goal is to encourage learners of all ages to develop a love for aviation, setting the stage for lifelong contributions to Oklahoma aviation and other STEM career fields.
The grant, to be used for programs throughout the 2018-2019 school year and the summer of 2019, will help serve more than 3,000 students in grades K-12. Part of the funding will be used for Sooner Flight Camp scholarships, making it possible for students who otherwise couldn’t afford to attend the camp.
“OAC is proud to assist Sooner Flight Academy as part of our aviation education grant program, and we look forward to seeing the progress they achieve with their students,” said Catherine Taber, aviation program manager and aviation education coordinator for the commission.
OAC has been awarding aerospace and aviation education grants for more than 30 years, providing nearly $1.9 million in education funding within the last 10 years.
