Graduation Is Almost Here!

Graduation Is Almost Here!

It’s mid-April. The grass is suddenly much greener, the flowers have awakened, the football team will dust off their helmets for the Red/White game Saturday, and all you students can likely smell the end of the semester. Spring is definitely in the air.

For some of our students, a long-anticipated goal is finally at hand: graduation. I was reminded of this while I was in Las Vegas. Our Vegas partnership is now two years old, and this year we are yielding our first crop of graduates.

Spring graduation at OU is a big celebration. The university-wide commencement ceremony will be held Friday, May 13 at 7 p.m. at the OU football stadium. Thousands of graduates and their families are invited to honor the accomplishments of these proud grads. This year’s commencement speaker will be U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. Commencement is also the only time graduates can receive their official OU alumni pins. If you graduated last December, you are invited to join the fun at commencement.

The following morning at 10:30 a.m., CLS will host its convocation ceremony. Held in the Rupel Jones Theatre at OU, this is a more intimate gathering specifically for CLS graduates. Because seating in the theater is limited, graduates are required to RSVP for convocation. The deadline to RSVP is this Friday, April 15. The RSVP form can be found in the convocation packet. If you have questions related to convocation, contact Missy Mitchell at

If you’re a graduate who’s still trying to decide whether to attend these events, ask your families what they think. Many times, commencement and convocation mean just as much to our grads’ families as they do to the person who earned the degree. Your families have supported you during this time. I bet it would mean a lot for them to watch you be recognized for your achievements.

Update: The College of Liberal Studies was renamed the College of Professional and Continuing Studies in 2017.
