The College of Liberal Studies sponsored documentary film Women Behind Bars: The Voices of Oklahoma’s Incarcerated Women and their Childrenwas recently released to the public for free viewing via YouTube.com and iTunesU.
The film focuses on the fact that the state of Oklahoma ranks first in the nation in female incarcerations, incarcerating 132 women per 100,000 population, compared to the national average of 68.
Women Behind Barswas directed, produced, and edited by Amina Benalioulhaj, a recent graduate of OU’s Women and Gender Studies Program and was inspired by the research of CLS professor Susan Sharp.
Women Behind Barsoriginally premiered at the deadCENTER Film Festival in Oklahoma City in June 2010 and also has been shown to many schools and organizations throughout the state.
Update: The College of Liberal Studies was renamed the College of Professional and Continuing Studies in 2017.
