What class?
Lifespan Health
Why is it cool?
The way we look at aging is changing.
In a quest for the fountain of youth, older adults are looking for ways to change their lifestyles in order to become more youthful and live longer. Healthy habits are also being passed on to children, who are realizing the importance of diet and exercise at an early age.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, one-in-five Americans will be age 65 or older by the year 2050, and at least 400,000 people will be over the age of 100. With the possibility of medical interventions that could reverse aging, living to be 120 is becoming more believable.
Lifespan Health is cool because it introduces students to the importance and principles of good health as well as health issues that occur through all stages of life. In this class, students will be challenged to think about and understand the characteristics of good health and challenges to healthy living from birth through senior adulthood. They will learn to identify signs of basic health problems and gain insight into how lifestyles, behaviors, cultural and other related factors affect health.
Through readings, discussions and writing assignments, students will learn how to apply the strategies they learn across the lifespan. Students will leave with a practical knowledge of health promotion, as well as the ability to educate and empower people of all ages to take more control over decisions that affect their health.
