Army Veteran, OU Alumnus Named Patriot of the Game

The OU College of Professional and Continuing Studies recognized an Army veteran and OU alumnus recently when retired U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class John Dean Jr. was honored as Patriot of the Game. Dean was recognized during OU’s spring football game on April 23 at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium before a record-setting pre-season crowd.

Dean, who lives in Durant, graduated from OU in 2014 with a master’s degree in public administration.

Dean enlisted in 1984, serving on many deployments, including Operation Desert Shield, Operation Desert Storm and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Dean enlisted in 1984, serving on many deployments, including Operation Desert Shield, Operation Desert Storm and Operation Enduring Freedom. During Operation Desert Shield, he was part of the “line in the sand,” arriving in Saudi Arabia during the early morning of Aug. 8, 1990. He remained in Saudi Arabia as part of the ground war of Operation Desert Storm.

His other assignments included operations in Germany, Bosnia, Turkey, Iraq and Afghanistan.

During his service, Dean was a Special Forces Qualification Course graduate, an Advanced Non-Commissioned Officer Course graduate and a master parachutist.

Before retiring in 2004, Dean earned the Combat Infantry Badge 2nd Award and the Expert Infantry Badge. His other awards include a Bronze Star with Oak-leaf, Meritorious Service Medal with 4 Oak-leaf cluster, Army Commendation Medal with 4 Oak-leaf cluster, Army Achievement Medal with Silver Oak-leaf, Humanitarian Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, as well as many others acknowledging his commitment to service.

Presented by the OU College of Professional and Continuing Studies, Patriot of the Game honors military service members at home football games, as well as various men’s and women’s basketball games, baseball games and softball games.
